Static vs dynamic QR codes
They can look identical, but they behave differently after the scan. The important difference is where the destination lives.
Short answer
A static QR stores the final data in the pattern and cannot be edited after printing. A dynamic QR stores a managed redirect URL, which can change destination and record scans but depends on that service continuing to work.
The practical difference
BananaSplit creates static QR codes only. Scans go directly to the encoded destination without a BananaSplit redirect.

Fixed after creation, direct destination, no built-in tracking, no subscription, and no provider-controlled expiry.

Editable destination and scan analytics, but the printed code points to a provider or self-managed redirect.
Choose static when the data should stay fixed
Static is a strong fit for Wi-Fi credentials, plain text, contact details, permanent URLs, IDs, and print where privacy and independence matter more than analytics.
Choose dynamic when change is part of the job
Dynamic is useful for seasonal campaigns, rotating menus, changing event pages, A/B destinations, or teams that need scan analytics. Read the provider’s pricing, retention, privacy, and expiry terms before printing.
A provider-independent option
Encode a short URL on a domain you control, then manage that URL’s redirect yourself. The QR stays static while you retain control of the destination.
Frequently asked questions
Do static QR codes expire?
The pattern does not expire. The encoded website, domain, Wi-Fi password, or other destination can still stop working or change.
Can I turn a static QR code into a dynamic one?
Not after printing. You need a new code that points to a managed redirect URL.
Can a static QR code track scans?
Not by itself. A website you control may measure visits after the scan, but the QR pattern contains no analytics system.
