How to scan a QR code

Most current iPhone and Android phones can scan a QR code with the built-in camera. You usually do not need a separate scanner app.

Short answer

Open the camera, point it steadily at the whole QR code, wait for the destination banner, then inspect the address before opening it. For a screenshot, use the phone’s photo viewer or visual-search action.

On iPhone

Open Camera, use the rear camera, and keep the entire code inside the frame. Tap the banner that appears. For a saved image, open it in Photos and press or tap the detected QR link.

On Android

Open the camera and point it at the full code. Many phones show a link automatically. If not, use the camera’s Lens or QR mode. For screenshots, open the image in Photos or Gallery and choose Lens or the available scan action.

Scan safely

A QR code can hide a misleading or malicious destination just like a shortened link. Read the domain before opening it, avoid entering passwords or payment details after an unexpected scan, and leave any page that asks for an unrelated download.

  • If nothing appears

Clean the lens, increase light or screen brightness, move back until the whole code is visible, hold steady, and try the phone’s dedicated QR or Lens mode.

  • If the destination looks wrong

Do not open it. Ask the person or organisation that displayed the QR code to confirm the expected domain.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an app to scan a QR code?

Usually no. Current iPhone and Android camera apps include QR recognition, with Lens or a QR mode as a fallback.

Can I scan a QR code from a screenshot on the same phone?

Yes. Open the image in Photos or Gallery and use the detected-link, Lens, visual-search, or QR action available on the device.

Why does my camera not detect the QR code?

The code may be cropped, too small, blurred, low-contrast, reflective, damaged, or too close to the camera. Reframe the whole square and improve light or distance.

Ready to make the code?

Create a private static QR code, add a logo or colour, then download PNG or print-ready SVG.
