BananaSplit Privacy Policy

Last updated: September 8, 2026

This Privacy Policy explains how BananaSplit collects, uses, shares, and protects personal information when you use the BananaSplit websites, mobile applications, command-line tools, and related services (collectively, the "Services").

By using BananaSplit, you acknowledge the practices described in this Privacy Policy.

1. Information We Collect

We collect information you provide directly, information collected automatically when you use the Services, and information created through your use of BananaSplit.

Information you provide

This may include:

  • account details such as your name, username, email address, and password-related data;
  • profile information such as profile images;
  • shared expense information such as group names, expense descriptions, amounts, splits, balances, comments, and payment records;
  • selected files you upload, such as receipts, bank screenshots, avatars, or story images;
  • optional place tags you attach to an expense story;
  • communications you send to us, including support requests and feedback; and
  • information you provide when inviting other people to use BananaSplit.

Information collected automatically

Depending on how you use the Services, we may automatically collect:

  • device, app, and command-line tool information, such as device type, operating system, app or CLI version, language, CPU architecture, and identifiers;
  • usage information, such as pages or screens viewed, features used through the app, website, or CLI, interactions, and service events;
  • API request and server log information, including request metadata and user-agent details;
  • for CLI requests, user-agent details may also indicate whether the request comes from a CI environment or a terminal;
  • log and diagnostic information, including crash data, error reports, and performance information;
  • approximate location information inferred from your IP address on web; and
  • cookie, local storage, and similar data used to keep you signed in and support the Services.

Information created through your use of the Services

This includes records generated as you use BananaSplit, such as group memberships, invitations, notification preferences, transaction history inside the app, and subscription records such as selected plan, entitlement status, billing interval, renewal or expiration date, management link, and feature quota usage.

2. How We Use Information

We use personal information to:

  • create and manage your account;
  • authenticate you and keep you signed in;
  • provide shared expense tracking, balances, invites, uploads, receipt or screenshot extraction, and related features;
  • set up, maintain, restore, and manage subscriptions, entitlements, quotas, and billing-related access;
  • send account and service messages such as verification emails, password reset messages, and security notices, plus product updates and marketing emails after you sign up;
  • provide notifications about expenses, payments, friend requests, and reminders when you enable them;
  • personalize parts of the experience, including support interactions;
  • monitor usage, troubleshoot issues, improve performance, and develop new features;
  • detect, investigate, and prevent fraud, abuse, security incidents, and violations of our terms; and
  • comply with legal obligations and enforce our rights.

3. Analytics, Diagnostics, and Support Tools

BananaSplit currently uses third-party tools to help operate and improve the Services.

PostHog

We use PostHog for product analytics and error monitoring. This may include information such as app events, page or screen views, device and browser details, crash information, and diagnostic metadata.

On web, analytics requests may be sent through e.bananasplit.net as a proxy. On mobile, analytics may be sent from the app directly through the configured analytics SDK.

CLI-related product analytics may be derived by our backend from authenticated API requests and sent to PostHog using your BananaSplit account ID. These events are linked to your account and are not anonymous. The CLI does not contain an analytics SDK and does not send analytics itself.

Crisp

If support chat is enabled, we may use Crisp to provide customer support. When available, support chat may receive information such as your name, email address, user ID, and the contents of your messages with support.

Loops

We use Loops to process and deliver newsletter emails, product updates, launch notes, and marketing emails. Loops may process your email address and related delivery metadata for this purpose.

You can unsubscribe from marketing emails at any time using the unsubscribe link in the email. Transactional or service-related emails may still be sent when needed to operate the Services.

RevenueCat and billing providers

We use RevenueCat to support Banana Gold subscription purchases, entitlement management, restore purchases, billing management, and platform-specific subscription flows.

Depending on your platform, subscription checkout or management may take place through Apple App Store, Google Play, RevenueCat Web Billing, or RevenueCat's customer portal.

To operate subscriptions, we may share or receive data such as your BananaSplit user ID, subscription or entitlement status, current product, billing interval, renewal or expiration date, provider management URL, and related subscription events or metadata.

We use this information to activate paid features, apply plan-based limits, display plan and billing details inside the app, support upgrades, restores, and cancellations, and sync subscription status with our backend.

OCR, AI, and authentication

Receipt or bank screenshot images you upload are sent to our backend and AI/OCR processors to extract expense details such as merchant, total, and date. Sign in with Apple and Google Sign-In process authentication data when you choose those login options.

4. Mobile app permissions

Mobile permissions are optional and purpose-limited:

  • Location: when-in-use only, used only when you choose to tag an expense story with the current place. No background location or continuous tracking.
  • Camera: used to take receipt photos. Receipt images are uploaded for OCR/AI expense extraction.
  • Photos: the system picker lets you choose a receipt, bank screenshot, avatar, or story image. We access only what you select, and selected images may be uploaded for extraction or display.
  • Photo save: used only to save a generated expense story image to your gallery.
  • Notifications: used for expense, payment, and friend request alerts. Push tokens may be handled by Expo, Apple APNs, and Firebase Cloud Messaging.

5. Authentication and Session Data

We use authentication and session technologies to sign you in and keep your account secure.

On web, this may include the use of local storage and cookies or similar browser storage. These technologies help us maintain your session and support authenticated features.

6. How Information Is Shared

We may share information in the following situations:

  • with other BananaSplit users, when you participate in shared groups, expenses, balances, invites, or other collaborative features;
  • with service providers and vendors that help us operate the Services, such as infrastructure, analytics, AI/OCR, authentication, customer support, notification, subscription, billing, and entitlement providers;
  • with Apple, Google, RevenueCat, or similar billing partners when needed to sell, restore, manage, or cancel subscriptions;
  • if required by law, regulation, legal process, or government request;
  • to protect the rights, property, and safety of BananaSplit, our users, or others;
  • in connection with a merger, acquisition, financing, reorganization, sale of assets, or similar transaction; or
  • with your consent or at your direction.

7. Data Retention

We keep personal information for as long as reasonably necessary to provide the Services, maintain the legitimate operation of the product, comply with legal obligations, resolve disputes, and enforce our agreements.

Retention periods may vary depending on the type of information, how sensitive it is, and whether we need it for account integrity, fraud prevention, support, or legal compliance.

8. Your Choices

Depending on your location and how you use the Services, you may be able to:

  • access or update certain profile information in your account;
  • delete content you uploaded or submitted through the Services;
  • disable notifications through the app or your device settings;
  • control cookies or browser storage through your browser settings;
  • unsubscribe from marketing emails using the unsubscribe link included in those emails;
  • manage or cancel subscriptions through the applicable app store settings or billing portal; and
  • contact us to request access, correction, deletion, or other privacy-related actions where applicable law provides those rights.

If you ask us to delete information, we may still keep certain data when necessary for security, legal, operational, or recordkeeping reasons.

If you purchased Banana Gold, restore purchases and certain plan changes may also be available through the applicable provider flow.

9. International Data Processing

BananaSplit may use service providers and technical infrastructure located in different countries. As a result, your information may be processed in countries other than the one where you live.

Where required, we take reasonable steps intended to protect personal information during cross-border processing.

10. Children's Privacy

BananaSplit is not intended for children under 18, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 18.

If you believe a child has provided personal information to BananaSplit, contact us and we will review the situation.

11. Security

We use reasonable administrative, technical, and organizational measures designed to protect personal information. However, no method of transmission over the internet or electronic storage is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

12. Third-Party Services and Links

The Services may link to third-party websites, app stores, or services that we do not control. This Privacy Policy does not apply to those third parties, and their practices are governed by their own privacy policies and terms.

13. Changes to This Privacy Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. If we make material changes, we may let you know by posting the updated policy, updating the "Last updated" date, or using another reasonable method.

Your continued use of the Services after an updated Privacy Policy becomes effective means you acknowledge the revised policy.
